Helping You Reach A Fair Child Custody Arrangement

If you have minor children, your biggest concern in a divorce is making sure that your children are taken care of. Your attorney will provide invaluable assistance in creating a sensible child custody plan that helps you preserve your relationship with your children. I am family lawyer J. Melanie Slaughter. Child custody issues are a major part of my family law practice. You can rely on my judgment and experience to guide you through the process.

Finding Solutions That Reflect Your Child's Best Interests

In Florida, child custody arrangements must be written down in a parenting plan. A parenting plan will cover how the parents share their time with the children, including holidays and summer vacations. Parenting plans will also cover health care, school issues, a child's special needs, and other issues.

When creating a parenting plan, I am always focused on what is in the best interests of the child. I will work closely with you to help you understand your goals. At the outset, I will tell you how a judge is likely to view your position, and whether it is reasonable. I do not want you to be surprised with anything that happens in the process. In most cases, we will negotiate a parenting plan with your spouse and his or her lawyers. With this said, if the other side will not be reasonable, I am a strong litigator.

Florida's Custody Laws Will Not Change For The Time Being

In April 2016, Governor Rick Scott vetoed a bill that would have radically altered Florida's child custody laws. This bill, had it gone into effect, would have required courts to presume that child custody would be a 50/50 split between the parents. A parent could have overcome this presumption by showing why a 50/50 division would not be in the child's best interests.
